Stripping a door yourself can look like a simple weekend job. A tin of chemical stripper, some sandpaper, and a free Saturday, and you’re sorted. In practice it rarely goes that smoothly.
We get called out fairly often to sort out doors that were stripped at home and didn’t quite go to plan. Here are the mistakes we see most, and why booking a professional dip and strip usually works out cheaper in the long run.
1. Using the Wrong Method for the Type of Wood
Pine, oak and softwood all behave differently under heat guns, chemical strippers and sanders. Apply too much heat to pine and you can scorch the surface. Sand too aggressively and you risk raising the grain unevenly across the panels. Getting the method wrong doesn’t just look bad, it can damage the wood permanently.
2. Not Protecting the Surrounding Area
Chemical stripper has a habit of ending up somewhere you didn’t intend. Drips onto flooring, skirting boards and door furniture are common, and some strippers can damage carpets or stain nearby paintwork. Professional stripping is done off site in a controlled dip tank, so your home stays mess free.
3. Rushing the Sanding Stage
Once the old paint is off, the sanding stage is what determines how smooth the final finish will look. Skipping grits or sanding too quickly leaves swirl marks and rough patches that show up clearly once oil or varnish is applied.
4. Leaving Old Paint in Grooves and Panelling
Doors with beading, panels or moulded edges are notoriously hard to strip evenly by hand. Paint left behind in the corners and grooves stands out once the rest of the door is bare, and going back over it later is fiddly and time consuming.
5. Skipping a Proper Clean Before Refinishing
Dust and residue left on the surface after stripping can stop oil or wax soaking in evenly, leading to a patchy finish. A thorough clean and light sand before refinishing makes a real difference to the end result.
