Getting a door professionally stripped is only half the job. What you do in the days and weeks afterwards has a big effect on how it looks in five or ten years’ time.
Here’s how to look after a freshly stripped door so it stays in good shape.

1. Let the Wood Settle Before Finishing
Freshly stripped wood needs a little time to dry out fully, especially after coming through a dip tank. Applying oil or varnish too soon can trap moisture underneath the finish, leading to a cloudy or uneven look later on. A day or two in a dry room is usually enough.
2. Choose a Finish That Suits the Room
An external door needs a weatherproof finish such as exterior varnish or paint, while an internal door has more options, from hard wax oil to a simple wax polish. Think about how much sunlight, moisture and general wear the door will face before picking a product.
3. Reapply Oil or Wax Every So Often
Hard wax oil and wax finishes wear thinner over time, particularly around handles and the bottom of the door where hands and feet make the most contact. A light reapplication once a year keeps the wood protected and stops it drying out.

4. Keep an Eye on Sunlight and Damp
Direct sun can fade a finish and dry out the wood underneath, while damp or steamy rooms like bathrooms and kitchens can cause the grain to swell slightly. Neither is usually a big problem, but it’s worth choosing a finish suited to the conditions the door will actually face.
5. Deal With Scratches and Marks Early
Small scuffs and scratches are far easier to sand out and touch up while they’re fresh, before dirt and moisture work their way into the exposed wood. A quick light sand and a dab of matching oil or wax is often all that’s needed.
