Door stripping during renovation is easier to organise when it’s part of the plan from the beginning. While walls, floors and fittings get plenty of attention, original wooden doors can make a big difference to the finished room.
If you’re hoping to reveal the timber beneath old paint, think about removal, finishing and rehanging alongside the rest of the work.

1. Decide Which Doors You Want to Keep
Start with an inventory of the doors in your home. Note their condition, style and any features you want to preserve. Matching panels and mouldings can help a period home feel consistent, even when the rooms around them are changing.
Send photos for an initial assessment before assuming every door can be dipped. Construction and old repairs may affect both the method and the final appearance.
2. Book Around the Work in Each Room
Ask about turnaround before fixing a date with your decorator or joiner. It can be useful to remove doors while other work is happening, but you still need to think about access, privacy and safe storage.
Avoid arranging the final finish while nearby work is creating lots of dust. Leave enough time for the wood to be ready and for the chosen finish to dry or cure according to its instructions.
3. Keep Track of Doors and Fittings
Record which door belongs to each frame, including which way it opens. Keep removable fittings and screws in labelled bags. Small differences in dimensions and hinge positions can make rehanging more complicated if several doors get mixed up.

4. Allow for What the Paint Might Hide
Old coatings can conceal filler, uneven colour and earlier repairs. Once the paint is removed, you can make a better decision about whether to keep the wood visible or repaint. Build some flexibility into the renovation plan rather than choosing a final colour before seeing the bare surface.
5. Agree the Finish Before Rehanging
Think about the look you want and how the door will be used. A natural finish needs to suit the timber and location; repainting needs suitable preparation and a compatible coating system. Ask for advice and test the appearance in an inconspicuous area where appropriate.
