Can Every Wooden Door Be Dipped and Stripped?

Door stripping suitability depends on more than the colour of the paint. Two doors can look much the same from the outside but have very different materials and joints underneath.

Before booking a dip and strip service, it’s worth checking how your door was made and what condition it is in. The right assessment helps set realistic expectations for the result.

1. Solid Timber Is a Starting Point

Many traditional solid wooden doors are candidates for professional stripping. Removing old coatings can uncover the panels, mouldings and grain that made the door attractive in the first place. However, solid timber alone doesn’t settle the choice of method: the wood species, joints and existing condition also matter.

2. Veneer and Engineered Materials Need Different Care

A wood-effect surface doesn’t always mean solid wood. Some doors use a thin decorative veneer over another material, while others include MDF or composite components. Moisture and stripping products can affect these materials differently.

Tell us if you know the construction. If you don’t, send photos of the edges and any exposed areas so we can discuss whether further inspection is needed.

3. Glass and Decorative Details Need Assessment

Glazed panels, delicate mouldings and unusual fittings should be pointed out before work begins. Their condition and the way they are fixed influence handling and preparation. An older glazed door may need a different plan from a straightforward panelled interior door.

4. Old Damage Can Change the Plan

Loose joints, rot, splits and previous repairs may only become fully visible when the coating comes off. Paint stripping can reveal these issues, but it won’t make damaged timber sound again. Discuss repairs and the likely appearance of any filler before choosing a natural wood finish.

5. Check Any Special Requirements

If a door is identified as a fire door or has another specialist function, raise that before arranging alterations. Don’t assume that a stripping method appropriate for an ordinary timber door is suitable for it. The door’s specification and any relevant guidance need to be considered.
