Furniture stripping can change the way you see an old chair, table or chest. Thick paint often covers the grain and softens the details, making a well-made wooden piece look plain or tired.
But the surface underneath isn’t always perfect. Knowing what old paint can hide helps you decide what to restore and what finish to choose afterwards.

1. Grain and Colour You Haven’t Seen Before
A painted piece may contain attractive timber that hasn’t been visible for years. Removing the coating lets you see the grain, knots and natural colour more clearly. Different parts of a piece can vary in tone, so expect character rather than assuming everything will match exactly.
2. Details Filled with Layers of Paint
Chair spindles, carved edges and shaped feet can lose definition when paint builds up in their grooves. Careful stripping helps uncover those shapes again. The best approach depends on the material and construction, especially where there are delicate parts or glued joints.
3. Earlier Repairs and Replacement Parts
Paint can disguise filler, patched areas and replacement timber. These may become more noticeable once the surface is bare. That’s useful information when deciding the next step, but it can also change your plans for a clear finish.
Ask about any loose joints or sticking drawers separately. Removing a coating and repairing the structure are different jobs, even when they form part of the same restoration project.

4. Marks That Need Further Attention
Old water marks, dents and scratches don’t necessarily disappear with the paint. Some sit in the finish; others reach into the timber itself. Once stripped, the surface can be assessed properly so you can weigh up further preparation against keeping some signs of age.
5. Construction That Affects the Method
Solid wood, veneer and composite materials need different consideration. Send photographs of the whole piece and close-ups of edges, joints and damaged areas before booking. For valuable antiques or pieces with an important original finish, discuss whether specialist conservation advice is appropriate before removing anything.
